What Are Blocked Fallopian Tubes
In females, there are two tubes which sit on each side of their uterus called fallopian tubes. They serve as a link between the uterus and the ovaries. These tubes help the mature egg which comes from the ovaries to get to the uterus. blocked fallopian tubes are evident if this process is unable to take place.
This can happen in one or sometimes in both tubes. This infertility condition is termed tubal factor. It is said to be the cause of infertility in as much as forty percent of women who are infertile.
During ovulation each month, an ovary releases an egg. This egg will travel from the ovary, it goes through the tubes and then enters the uterus. The sperm has to travel from the cervix and has to go through the fallopian tubes to meet up with the egg. Fertilization will occur at the time when the egg is traveling in the tube.
Should either one or possibly both of these fallopian tubes be blocked, the egg will not reach the uterus. This condition will also not allow the sperm to reach the egg, thus fertilization will not take place. There is the possibility of the tube being partially blocked. If fertilization occurs in this instance, this could result in a tubal or ectopic pregnancy.
One of the causes of obstructed tubes are STD infections and in particular Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Incidences of ruptured appendix could also be a cause. Should you have suffered a miscarriage or had an abortion and been infected, this may be a cause. Another cause is endometriosis.
In order to make a diagnosis, an x-ray will be done. A dye will be put through the cervix via a small tube. The dye should travel through to the pelvic area. Other tests that may be done are blood tests to check for STD infections or a spectroscopy will be performed.
The treatments for blocked fallopian tubes include laparoscopic surgery. This surgery will be most effective if you only have a few adhesion\’s between the tubes and the ovaries. If you are still experiencing problems with becoming pregnant, your doctor may suggest fertility drugs. This is not an option if both your tubes are blocked. If all fails, then your doctor will more than likely suggest IVF treatment. This will be a choice if you have multiple adhesion\’s and scarring.
