Is Mind Over Matter Just A Myth?
It is generally believed that the human mind is definitely more powerful than the human body. Actually, mind over matter refers to the act or the process of controlling physical pain that a person may be experiencing. An example is the act of putting a hand over a candle, or holding a hand over very hot water, and yet experiencing no pain. Many people are of the opinion that with the development of concentration and constructive thinking, individuals can even walk on hot, scalding coals, without burning their feet.
The phrase ‘mind over matter’ became popular during the mid 20th century. The phrase is present even now; but now it’s used mostly by hackers. An interesting fact is that Mao Tsetung advocated the concept of ‘mind of matter’ because he wanted the help of the Chinese peasants to move China from feudalism to socialism.
The phrase has even been proved scientifically by Prof. Moddel of the Colorado University. He had trained a beam of light on a glass slide and asked his subjects to concentrate on ‘wanting’ the amount of light reflected, to be increased. The experiment showed a 0.005% increase in the amount of light reflected.
When attempting to control the mind, we have to begin with increasing our level of concentration- we cannot get distracted easily. Our will power will have to be strengthened, and also our ability to withstand pain. This is easier said than done. It requires a large amount of strength of character and discipline. We will know that we have achieved success when we will be able to move objects around simply by using our minds.
The human mind is at once a great servant and a very bad master as put forward by psychics, for humans with their intricate thoughts wield a very powerful force over the physical world. This force shows when seemingly unrelated events occur simultaneously in a meaningful manner when humans will them to. Thus, the relation between these two unrelated events is actually the incoherent human mind which is so because mathematical laws haven’t been developed for the fancies of the conscious or the subconscious.
‘Psycho kinesis’ (earlier known as telekinesis) is the phenomenon of displacement of objects simply by sheer will. In other words, if you can move physically move matter by the sheer power of your thoughts, then it is an example of psychokinesis. Earlier it was thought to be the work of ghosts or spirits.
But that doubt was removed after a lot of research which took place after the nineteenth century and finally the human was held as the cause. Due to this, the coined term was changed to psychokinesis from telekinesis. The occurrence is measured in two ways, ‘micro Psycho kinesis’ and ‘macro Psycho kinesis’.
‘Mind over matter’ doesn’t only have a paranormal aspect to it. It has a lot of bearing in personal development, spirituality, and philosophy. In this respect we can mention the aspect of ‘responsibility assumption’. This basically implies that, every human being is responsible for his or her own fate. Every individual’s life is a result of that person’s mind and command that mind has. This topic has a lot of similarity with the concept of ‘law of attraction’.
Thus it can safely be concluded that the human mind is an unbridled force and if it can be channeled, defined by the conscious or otherwise, it may produce desirable results. It is only required for us to realize the force in its entirety and in all of its implications.
